Asynchronous study materials to supplement synchronous instruction of Biology and AP Biology
Enroll in a course and sign in to save your progress
Please keep in mind that this is intended to be paired with in-class instruction and labs that go with NGSS-aligned Freshman Biology or College Board-approved AP Biology. It is meant to help you critically think and analyze the content info, and enrich classroom discussions by bringing your questions and ideas. It is NOT intended as a textbook replacement or sole source of learning for either course.
Why should I create an account and log in to access course materials?
You are creating an account to save your progress through the course. You can use your school email account or a personal account.
Both the Biology and AP Biology courses are "living" courses, in that they are updated regularly with relevant study materials. As I find additional resources, or need to modify existing content for clarity, the courses will be edited in real time through the year. Please log in and start afresh when you sit down to study so you have the latest version before you.
Using the online course layout also allows you to switch easily between units and modules and see all topics at a glance. When we study, one concept may trigger a memory of a related concept in another unit, and this layout allows you to navigate easily through all the course materials.
How are the online courses organized?
Courses are compiled by Mrs. Warrier, Science Educator at Dougherty Valley High School in California. They are not meant to be stand alone courses, but to enrich classroom learning through an organized immersion into topics.
The Biology online course introduces you to the main topics and themes in Biology sequentially. The text, sequence, and critical thinking questions are designed to help you construct your understanding of the main concepts in Biology, and to reflect on broader connections as you master content and skills. The course aligns with CA-NGSS standards and supplements classroom learning. It includes a compilation of resources created by numerous educators and educational organizations.
The AP Biology Course Materials compiles resources we will use to master the content and practice science skills. It includes chapter slide decks with lecture outlines, lab/ project information, review, and practice materials. All materials track with the requirements specified in the 2019 Course and Exam Description for AP Biology from College Board. A challenge faced by AP students is the sheer volume of material they have to master in a limited amount of time. The course is an attempt to streamline the essential resources we will use in one place, so that learning is more organized and making connections between topics becomes easier.
How should I use these courses?
There are many open-ended critical thinking and analytical questions embedded throughout the Biology online course. Ideally you should keep a Science notebook to record your notes, questions, and connections. Bring your ideas to classroom discussions. Use the self check questions to gauge your understanding; answers and explanations are immediately accessible as you work through them. This translates to the Freshman Biology/ Living Environment course offered in High School. It allows you to practice science skills while you learn Biology. They are NOT meant as a substitute for a textbook, and are best used to supplement synchronous learning. You can also use the materials in this course to review basic Bio concepts before taking AP Biology.
The AP Biology Course Materials is a compilation of study materials from various sources, organized by unit and topic. It is meant to supplement classroom instruction, labs, and activities. Use the materials to look ahead, review every day, and prepare for assessments. You will also see current peer reviewed original articles and other extra resources added in periodically to help you connect to real world applications.
If I have questions, who can I contact?
